Colon hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy / colonics

For those who haven’t heard about colon hydrotherapy, also known as colonics, it is basically a colon cleansing procedure. During this procedure the colon is flushed with large amounts of water to eliminate toxins. The reason you might not have heard of this before is because research on this procedure is limited and there is no concrete proof that it improves your health. Nonetheless, we will be looking into what colon hydrotherapy is, what are the benefits, and what risks might be involved.

One's colon is associated with all the waste, toxins and dirt within our bodies, so it's natural to want to have your colon cleaned out. Toxins, according to proponents of colonics, are linked to a variety of health issues, including bloating, fatigue, weight gain, bad skin, and so forth, and that is why they view colonics as a way to promote good health and well-being, boost vitality, and aid in weight loss. However, your body does a fairly good job of eliminating toxins and other harmful substances on its own thanks to two prime organs which are the kidney and the liver.

Even though this is not a very well known procedure, it is still practised for its claimed benefits.

Some of the benefits from a colon hydrotherapy include:

Toxin removal

Improves energy levels

Improves the immune system

Prevents Constipation

Improves Muscle Tone

Restores Hydration and pH Levels

Improves Complexion & Skin Appearance

Assists With Weight Loss

Improves Concentration

Decreases Anxiety Levels

Assists Fertility in Women

Decreases Your Risk of Colon Cancer and Helps Patients Healing From Cancer

The above mentioned benefits have not been proven to be directly linked to colon hydrotherapy, however, it claims that it contributes greatly to these benefits.

Because you are performing an unnatural procedure to the body, your body can react in various ways. Each body is unique and thus reacts differently. It is important to note that in some ways it can be harmful. Some of the risks and side effects of a colon hydrotherapy include:

  • Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • A tear in the rectum (perforation)
  • Infection
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Removal of helpful bacteria

Each of these side effects has its own secondary side effects which can make this procedure even more dangerous. It is advised that if you have an existing heart or kidney condition then it is best to refrain from procedures such as these, as it can worsen your existing condition.

As tempting as a colon cleansing sound, and as promising as its claimed benefits appear, the effect it has on each person varies with regards to your body. Before considering a procedure such as this, it is crucial that you undergo a health check up and focus on areas that might be affected such  as your heart, kidneys, pH and electrolyte levels, and of course, your overall colon health. If something abnormal pops up in your results it's best to stay away, and if your colon test results show no signs of any problem then it means you quite frankly do not even need a colon hydrotherapy because your gut is doing exactly what it’s supposed to. However, if this is something you truly want to undergo, do research and have it done at accredited clinics to ensure you are in safe and capable hands.
